The recent MySpace.com hack on Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan’s private photos proves once again that anything you post on the web (particularly social sites) is not private.

The photos were released the the public on Tuesday and they aren’t really that big a deal as far as the pics are concerned. Nothing racy or provocative for either Hilton or Lohan. I’m sure they love the publicity either way but the invasion of privacy drives home the point that most things you post have the potential of being hacked.

Everyone should make it a general rule not to post things on social networking sites that you don’t want made public. MySpace and Facebook are two of the largest social networking sites on the web and both have been hacked on several occasions. The same goes for email privacy and messages sent over IM (instant messaging.) Both platforms have he potential of being hacked and depending on the operating system you are using or browser based software - hacking can be rather easy.

This is why it is important not to send sensitive data through email or instant messaging software such as passwords or login information. I have seen very sensitive info sent through emails such as credit card numbers because the sender is not aware of the dangers. While these major social sites do their best to secure the privacy of users, in the end, someone out there is always searching for a vulnerability - so play it safe and think twice before hitting send!
