Each time the outer ear is hit, a blood clot can form. Eventually after the continuous blows to the ears, the cartilage in the outer ear separates and dies. Fibrous tissue begins to build up and the outer ear begins to resemble a cauliflower. James Thompson is known for his cauliflower ear and after tonight, I think he will be remembered for it being popped open and bleeding all over the place.
Many individuals suffer from ear problems every day. A very common ear problem is the ear infection which occurs often in children. Even adults can suffer form ear infections. Symptoms of ear infections for adults can include pain and swelling of the ear canal. A good friend of mine had a recent bout with an ear infection and was prescribed drops by her ear, nose and throat (ENT) doctor.
The funny thing is that fighters often view the cauliflower ear as a sign of pride for being a fighter. Because of this, they often refuse to wear protective head gear when in training. You can always spot a fighter when you notice their ears. Almost always at least one ear has the cauliflower ear damage. You won’t see it much in boxers but wrestlers and MMA fighters have it the most.
